$6 · Achocha Seeds - Cyclanthera Brachybotrys var Achochilla

Here's a new vegetable for most. The achocha, cyclanthera brachybotrys, is a real gem. When young it can be eaten fresh much like any gherkin, but as it ages, it becomes hollow, and is best suited for stuffing. Personally, I enjoy them best stuffed. Their flavour is amazing, and the vines are super prolific. Also, the spines are benign; they feel like rubber, and won't bother your hands or mouth. Some people describe the flavour to be a combination of cucumbers and green peppers. I don't get that; it's got it's own unique flavour. If you're looking to diversify your garden and diet, I highly recommend this vegetable. Its a very rare vegetable, and I think We're the only ones with these on Vancouver island at the moment, other than those who have already purchased seeds from us. Something to note, there are a few varieties of cyclanthera out there, and I've tried this one, as well as the more common c. pedata. I find this variety to be far superior as it's much tastier, and it doesn't explode and curl open like a peeling banana when ripe. I don't recommend c. pedata for that reason alone, as it has much less culinary value than this variety. Also, as a bonus, the numerous rubber-like spines make this plant extremely attractive.
